5 underrated movies that are worth watching

There are many movies in Bollywood which in spite of a good storyline don’t get much attention. Most of these movies are low budget movies which are not promoted anywhere. Here are some of the underrated movies that are not so popular but are worth watching.

1) Astu: One day I was just scanning the channels on TV and I came across this movie. Looking at the famous star cast I thought I will watch some scenes at least. But I didn’t realize when I got engrossed in this amazing movie. The movie has top stars like Dr. Mohan Agashe, Milind Soman, Iravati Hrashe, Amruta Subhash in their top-notch performances. Originally it is a Marathi movie but I watched it in Hindi dubbed version on star gold select. The story is about a Sanskrit scholar who is suffering from memory loss. Being a doctor himself Mohan Agashe has performed the challenging character of “Appa” with perfect ease. Irawati Harshe has done brilliant job in exhibiting the frustrations of a daughter. What I liked the most in this movie is that a daughter is taking care of her ailing father and her husband equally shares the responsibilities. Amruta Subhash has won National award for best supporting actress for this movie.

2) Ankhon Dekhi: You should watch this movie  for Sanjay Mishra’s stunning performance. Director Rajat Kapoor has done extraordinary work by adding humour along with emotions in this absolute gem. Set in Delhi the story revolves around a man who leads a normal life until an incidence takes place which altogether changes his perspective towards life. He decides he will only believe in things that are visible to him and that brings up hilarious situations including his visit to a zoo along with his friends and urging a lion to roar just to confirm a lion’s roar. Seema Pahwa and Rajat Kapoor are best in their roles. A very different type of movie indeed but enjoyable!

3) Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami: Another gem in the list of unrecognized movies which I enjoyed watching is “Ekkees Toppon ki salami” directed by Ravindra Gautam. Ravindra Gautam is a renowned director of television industry. He is well recognised for directing famous serials like “kasauti zindagi ki” and “Bade acche lagte hai” in the past and “kartik Poornima” recently. The film is a satire on social and political issues. The story is about the struggle of two brothers who are on a mission to fulfil their father’s last wish. All the actors have given brilliant performance. “Bitua mora” is a very heart touching song sung by Mohit Chauhan. In spite of some drawbacks the film is an entertaining one and it makes you emotional in the climax. Anupam kher has excellently performed his role of an honest employee. The supporting actors have done perfect justice with their characters.

4) Club 60: If you are a fan of Farookh Shekh then you should not miss this excellent movie. The film is about a heart rendering story of a couple who are dealing with the loss of their young son. The film also has veteran actors like Sarika, Raghuvir Yadav, Sharat Saxena, Tinu Anand, and Satish shah. The film begins with a sad story but gives you an optimistic hope in the end.  It has some soulful songs and ghazals. The song “Mera saya” is very touching and is picturized so beautifully. The film puts forward an important message that with old age people should not stop living their life instead enjoy with a free spirit and positivity.

5) Khosla ka Ghosla: This movie is again a must-watch realistic movie which due to its simple cast didn’t get much attention. The film is known to be Dibakar Banerjee’s directorial debut. Another satire on the difficulties faced by middle class families in big cities. The film has Anupam kher and Boman Irani in the lead but the performances of the supporting cast is admirable. What I enjoy in almost all such movies is their realism. These movies are simple but their message is powerful. Such movies take us back to old movies of talented makers like Sai Paranjpye, Basu Chatterjee and Rhishikesh Mukherjee.
